Spain: Endangered hamster-sized deer born in zoo

24 April 2014

A baby Java mouse-deer - one of the smallest hoofed animals in the world - has been born at a zoo in southern Spain.

The newborn deer is "no bigger than a hamster" and weighs about 100 grams, staff at Bioparc Fuengirola tell the El Pais newspaper. Adult Java mouse-deer are rarely bigger than rabbits or weigh more than 1kg (2.2lb). They are also known to be fiercely intelligent, and the species represents wisdom in many local legends in its native Java, says The Local website. (....)

Climate Change Strikes Baby Penguins

Climate change strikes baby penguins, brings consequences they can't handle

Global climate changes are a threat to many inhabitants of our planet, and some of them are at risk not because of the homo sapiens or their activities, but because of the vagaries of nature. The discussions about potential danger posed by such drastic changes in climate as global warming persist no matter how many spears are broken.

In the end, despite some inaccuracy of judgments, it is undeniable that in the long term it is homo sapiens who has a significant impact, if not on the environment as a whole, as a rather abstract thing, then on their neighbors from the animal world for certain. People naturally feel responsible for their younger brothers, and strive to correct all the wrongdoings.

However, in the case of baby penguins, neither people, nor our actions can be the cause of the animal disaster. It is all about heavy rainfalls and warmer temperatures in the areas where the penguins live. Biology professor Dee Boersma studied the weather patterns and wildlife populations around Punta Tombo, close to Argentina, home to the largest population of Magellanic penguins, when he found out that rainfall and storms have significantly strengthened and increased in number throughout the last few decades. More importantly, their peak now strikes penguins during their breeding period, which naturally results in hypothermia and the drastic decrease in the penguins’ population.

Almost two-thirds of hatchlings cannot get strong enough to get out of their nests, and starve to death or become food to birds and other animals, while their parents struggle to keep themselves alive under the grave weather conditions, desperately trying to store some food.

One of this facts could seem less tragic by itself, if it had not been multiplied by the existence of the other. What it means, is that severe storms are bad enough for penguins, but the consequences they bring for the future generations of the poor creatures from the Argentinean coast, are simply more than they can handle.

As for the solution to the problem, the scientists are trying to come up with a plan of sorts, but surely it is difficult to fight Mother Nature in her own dominion.

Bizarre and Extreme Cephalopods

A star at the Monterey Bay Aquarium's new exhibit "Tentacles: The Astounding Lives of Octopuses, Squid and Cuttlefishes" is the flapjack octopus. The name was inspired by its flattened appearance.

It is among the most anatomically compressed species in the world. The character "Pearl" in the Disney/Pixar film "Finding Nemo" was based on a flapjack octopus.

God's Wonderful Creatures

As today is Good Friday, I would like to focus on something more Christian. So, I decided to do a post on how God made these wonderful creatures; our amazing animals.

Just as God created the oceans, the sunsets, the woods, and the beaches, He made humans. Humans needed companions though, and food. So came to be animals! God made every bird, every reptile, every insect, every single animal there ever was. He made snakes, armadillos, penguins, horses, even mosquitoes, and so many more animals & insects.

"...God said, "Let the water teem with an abundance of living creatures, and on the earth let birds fly beneath the dome of the sky." And so it happened: God created the great sea monsters and all kinds of swimming creatures with which the water teems, and all kinds of winged birds. God saw how good it was, and God blessed them, saying, "Be fertile, multiply, and fill the water of the seas; and let the birds multiply on the earth." Evening came, and morning followed - the fifth day. Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth all kinds of living creatures: cattle, creeping things, and wild animals of all kinds." And so it happened: God made all kinds of wild animals, all kinds of cattle, and all kinds of creeping things of the earth. God saw how good it was." (GEN 1:19-25)

"God saw how good it was." I would like to draw special attention to this one phrase; for every animal He made has a purpose, too! He made bees to make honey, spiders to eat the mosquitoes, dogs to be our pets, and pigs for delicious pork, ham, & sausage. Beavers cut down trees, dung beetles roll dung over the prairie to fertilize it (however disgusting that might sound), and termites build so amazing mounds that even human architects can learn from them.

How good is our God? Let us say this prayer for all of God's creatures:

Saint Francis' Canticle of All Creatures

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord,
All praise is Yours, all glory, all honour and all blessings.
To you alone, Most High, do they belong,
and no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.

Praised be You my Lord with all Your creatures,
especially Sir Brother Sun,
Who is the day through whom You give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour,
Of You Most High, he bears the likeness.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
In the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air,
And fair and stormy, all weather's moods,
by which You cherish all that You have made.

Praised be You my Lord through Sister Water,
So useful, humble, precious and pure.

Praised be You my Lord through Brother Fire,
through whom You light the night
and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong.

Praised be You my Lord through our Sister,
Mother Earth who sustains and governs us,
producing varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs.
Praise be You my Lord through those who grant pardon
for love of You and bear sickness and trial.
Blessed are those who endure in peace,
By You Most High, they will be crowned.

Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death,
from whom no-one living can escape.
Woe to those who die in mortal sin!
Blessed are they She finds doing Your Will.
No second death can do them harm.

Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks,
And serve Him with great humility.

Elusive Oarfish Filmed in Rare Footage

Oarfish, including the 36-foot-long (11 meters) giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne), normally elude human eyes in the depths of the oceans. However, a lucky group of tourists recently filmed two oarfish in the shallow, coastal waters of Baja, Mexico. The oarfish observers were kayaking as part of a cruise with the Shedd Aquarium.

Oarfish live around the globe in temperate and tropical waters, down to 3,000 feet (915 meters) below the waves. Yet, despite the fishes' wide distribution, oceanographers and other humans rarely glimpse the four known species of oarfish in the deep sea habitat they prefer.

Most encounters with oarfish occur when the animals wash up dead on the beach, or sick in the shallows. The health of the oarfish filmed on the Baja coast was unknown. Last year, a dead 18-foot oarfish was towed to shore by a snorkeler at Catalina Island off the California coast. Then a 14-foot oarfish corpse turned up north of San Diego a few days later. The bigger fish was filled with parasites, reported Live Science, while the smaller fish was filled with hundreds of thousands of eggs, reported the AP.
