The Andalusian

Hello! Today I'm talking about Andalusians, my favorite breed of horse! The lady in the picture above is wearing a Spanish dress (I think) but I'm not sure what kind of Spanish dress it is. The tassels hanging off of the horse's brow band (in other words the part of the bridle that passes over the horse's forehead) are not only decorative but they keep flies away from the horse's eyes. They also show if the horse is walking properly by swinging from side to side. If you want to know more about classical Spanish tack in the show ring check out my info source:  To go to the main page:

Andalusians are most often grey but their coat color can be almost any other color as well. (I love the black ones!) They have long, thick manes and tails. Andalusians are very docile, noble and they are willing to please.

Andalusians originated on the Iberian peninsula, descending from the Iberian horse. The Andalusian was used as a war horse. They were taught war moves such as the ones that the Lipizzaner stallions perform today. The Andalusians were nearly wiped out during King Philip's reign when the Andalusians were interbred with heavier stallions. The only reason there are Andalusians today is because the Carthusian monks and the Zapata family hid some Andalusians.

An Aquarium of Funky Fish and Frogs?!

Today Mum and I went out to two of our " seasonal ponds" as I call them. They are more like big puddles than ponds. We caught two Boreal Chorus frogs and some assorted little critters that live in the water. We will release these guys in a few days. If you would like to listen to some calls and see where these frogs live, please watch this video.

One thing - I do not know what to name the two frogs (right now they are called Green and Brown and as their names suggest, one is green and the other is brown) so I will put some suggestions up and I would love it if you would  say what ones are your favorites or if you want you can suggest some names. I'll accept votes until Friday. (I do not know if they are boys or girls)( I will update every day)

Chickadee-dee-dee! Chickadee-dee-dee!

If you have a bird feeder set up in your yard you will most likely hear the Chickadee-dee-dee! of a chickadee. I hear them a lot all through the winter so I thought I might as well do a post on 'em.

They live in almost any place that has trees in most of North America, except the most southern part and the most northern parts. They live in cavities that have been made by other things and bird houses. They eat seeds, berries, insects, spiders and animal fat. They are quite small and round. I have to say that they are quite cute : )

Cat leaps to rescue four-year-old from biting dog

Friend in need: loving cat leaps to rescue four-year-old from biting dog

In a bike ride, a faithful home cat has saved her four-year-old master as a dog leapt at him, bit him and pulled him off the bike.

Jeremy Triantafilo was enjoying himself in the the drive of his California home on Tuesday when the dog attacked him, causing the Pussy cat Tara to rush to the rescue, hurl herself at the dog and chase it away in a short while. The video, posted on CCTV, went immediately viral, drawing attention of over five million YouTube viewers.

In an interview to ABC News the boy and his parents told a touching story of incredible affection between the cat and the boy ever since he was a toddler, as Tara even used to squeeze into his crib to comfortably nestle down under the boy’s blanket.

Tara appeared to have followed them home from the park five years ago and has lived with them ever since.

Moscow Zoo gets its first puma in decades

A three-year old puma male has been brought to the Moscow Zoo from Veliky Ustyug. After a required quarantine period, the animal was transferred to the enclosure that had been previously occupied by an aged leopard female, the Zoo’s press service reports.

The puma feels well and has a good appetite.

The Moscow Zoo hasn’t had pumas for about 40 years.

Pumas, also known as cougars or mountain lions, are found in North and South America and are the heaviest American wild cats after jaguars. Some species are 180 cm in length and weigh up to 100 kg. Pumas have thick short fur of plain coloring typically gray-brown or yellow-brown with black markings on their faces and a long tale with a black tip.

Dolphin! Dolphin!

Dolphins are my dad's favourite animal, and I have to say they might be mine too - well, of course after penguins and pandas! So, enjoy this post on dolphins while remembering that I love them :)

Bottle-nosed Dolphin
Dolphins, cetacean mammals, are related closely to whales & porpoises. As there is almost forty species of dolphins, they vary in size from 1.2 m to 9.5 m, and 40 kg to 10 tonnes. Dolphins are carnivores with a diet of mostly fish and squid.

Pacific White-sided Dolphin
How many types of dolphins are there?  There are 36 species of dolphins - that is, 32 marine and 4 river dolphins. These include Bottlenose, Dusky, Hector's, and Irrawaddy dolphins.

Note: N/ Animal of the Week

This post is just to say:

Note: No more animals of the week! Instead, I or Sable will try to do an 'animal spotlight'.
Why: Because I'm getting lazy of it... and I think the animal spotlight will be better. Hehe ;)

Electrical devices 'disrupt bird navigation'

Rebecca Morelle
Global science correspondent, BBC News

Electrical devices may disrupt the migration of some birds, a study suggests.

A German team has found that weak electromagnetic fields produced by equipment plugged into mains electricity and AM radio signals interfere with the animals' "internal compass".

They believe the effect is greatest when birds fly over urban areas.

The study is published in the journal Nature. (...)

The dogs that smell breath to monitor diabetes

8 May 2014

By Damon Rose
BBC News, Ouch

Guide dogs stop you bumping into things, assistance dogs can pull your clothes out of the washing machine. But medical detection dogs can keep you alive.

These dogs have been specially trained to smell several cancer types. Others can gauge the blood sugar levels in diabetics, warn allergic owners away from peanuts, or detect when people with narcolepsy are about to fall asleep.

Their sense of smell is so strong that they can smell their owner's breath from another room of the house, and can even be on guard from the side of a football pitch or dance floor. (...)

The Giraffe

Masai Giraffe
Giraffes, native to Africa, are the world's tallest mammals. Their family is Giraffidae, their class Mammalia, and their order Artiodactlyla. Their main food is acacia leaves.

Giraffes' usually inhabit grassy lands, savannas, and open woodlands. Even though they are hunted by lions mainly, giraffes also are predated by leopards, spotted hyenas, and wild dogs.

Thanks to their long legs, giraffes can cover extensive distances quickly, and can endure running for lengthy periods of times. Their tall necks give them another advantage: they can eat leaves and buds from tall trees which other animals would not be able to reach, and also keep a look out for predators.

Wow! Look at the hair on that horse!

I wonder how long it took to make that horse so shiny?

This is a zorse - a cross between a horse and a zebra. I am planning on doing a post on these guys sometime.
